Pete Thompson

Sgaaga

Pete is Mohawk and Akwesasne, who has resided on Haida Gwaii for 50 years.

He was given the name on the west coast Sgaaga, which means Doctor.

Pete was adopted by Elinor Russ, of the Raven Wolf Clan. Pete is a traditional mask carrier.

Pete is a direct descendent of the residential school system. He understands what the effects are, because he’s been living with them his whole life and Pete understands what it takes to heal and keep on healing.

In his clan, because of his traditional name, he is asked to help with the losses of people in any way he can. A retired paramedic, Pete transitioned to offering traditional healing practices, which he has been doing for 20 years.

Pete specializes in fire ceremonies, looking at spirit, baby ceremonies, boy’s / men’s coming of age ceremonies, and customized individual ceremonies.

He has facilitated many groups for men, including recovery groups and talking circles. Pete is certified in Indigenous Tools for Living.

Pete has collaborated with the mental health team in Skidegate, bringing a traditional Indigenous perspective to their work.  Pete says “I’m willing to help anyone who comes to me.”
